Child Protection and CAS

Children’s Aid Societies (CAS) protect children from abuse and neglect. The society will receive complaints concerning children’s welfare or domestic violence from involved professionals (doctors, teachers, police, etc.) and other members of the community, and will send investigators to the family home to follow up on any received complaints.

Depending on the results of the investigation, the society may subject the parents to ongoing supervision, take the child away from the parents, or even report the matter to the local police.

Parents facing society involvement need to immediately and effectively address any society concerns. Parents who fail to do this at an early stage will quickly find themselves facing a child protection proceeding with very short deadlines. Failure to meet these deadlines can result in the child being placed in permanent foster care.

Child Protection matters can be both emotional and confusing. Parents are often surprised by society involvement and potential removal of their child, and often struggle to meet the short deadlines of a child protection proceeding. Rapid assistance from a skilled lawyer is essential in keeping your child (or getting them back).
